- The name originally came about with British farmers referring to whisky as Sheep Dip. Farmers were distilling their own home-made malt and did not want to pay taxes. The malt was hidden in barrels marked as 'Sheep Dip'. This tradition was continued by merchants by entering cases of whisky as 'Sheep dip' on farmers' bills. Further pulling the wool over the farmers wives eyes if they happened to look at a receipt.
This vatted malt has a delicate and refined nose, of soft floral notes together with fruit flavours. On the palate, finesse and elegance gives way to a majestic assertion of pure malt whisky. The name originates from the picturesque, South Gloucestershire, village of Oldbury-on-Severn; more specifically the village pub, The Anchor, which overlooks the Severn estuary. Apparently, to confuse the tax officials, farmers used to keep their supplies of, illicit, home produced whisky in barrels marked Sheep Dip.
