The name originally came about with British farmers referring to whisky as Sheep Dip. Farmers were distilling their own home-made malt and did not want to pay taxes. The malt was hidden in barrels marked as 'Sheep Dip'. This tradition was continued by merchants by entering cases of whisky as 'Sheep dip' on farmers' bills. Further pulling the wool over the farmers wives eyes if they happened to look at a receipt.
