The 2014 Smoking Barrel Red is the first of its kind for Gundog Estate; an eclectic blend of Shiraz from our Hunter and Canberra vineyards, with both regions contributing in fairly even ratios. The blend started life as a playful exercise on the tasting bench during a broader classification of our 2014 reds. The theory was to marry the plum, blackberry and exotically spiced characters of the Murrumbateman Shiraz with the more savoury and earthy aromas of our old vine Hunter Shiraz parcels. On the palate, the partnership would continue with the combination of front and mid palate fleshiness of the cool climate fruit delicately complemented by the fine line of acidity and length of flavour afforded by the Hunter components. It was amazing to see such contrasting regions and parcels of fruit deliver such an effortless blended Shiraz, and what started as a fantasy on the tasting bench quickly evolved into reality!
