A superb sweet, fortified red wine from the sun-drenched terraces of Roussillon.

• Dried fig, prune and candied cherry mingle with cocoa, coffee, walnut and a savoury saline edge; the palate is velvety yet vibrant, with lingering sweetness and spice.
• Made using predominantly Grenache Noir, the cornerstone of Banyuls, prized for its ability to combine generosity with aromatic intensity.
• Fortification via mutage (the addition of grape spirit to halt fermentation) preserves natural sweetness, followed by five years' oxidative ageing in oak barrels and glass demijohns.
• From Banyuls, on the French-Spanish border, where steep schist slopes overlook the Mediterranean, producing wines of both power and minerality.
• A classic partner to chocolate desserts, blue cheeses or contemplative sipping; a southern French alternative to Ruby Port or Madeira.
