Pio Cesare

Website: http://www.piocesare.it

Pio Cesare was founded in 1881 by Cesare Pio, and is still in the family. Cesare was one of the very first wine producers to believe in the potential of wines from the Piemonte region such as Barolo, Barbaresco and Barbera. The overall ethos is one of minimal intervention, with maceration, oak contact and other variables carefully tailored to the individual wine. The cellars are certainly ancient, with the walls dating back to the Roman Empire! Significant investments have been made by the family to rebuild and restructure the cellars and winery's facilities in recent years. A new fermentation cellar was constructed including a racking area that is purely gravity fed. The new barrel room is located 12 meters underneath the existing Roman era cellar.

Pio Cesare owns more than 50 hectares of vineyards, located in the most highly rated areas of Piemonte. This includes some of the best single vineyard sites in Barolo and Barbaresco. Other selected vineyards are located in the communes of Diano d'Alba, Sinio and Trezzo.

As well as owning vineyards in some of the best and most desired sites in Piemonte Cesare also have very close links and long term contracts with established and respected growers. Cesare ferment and age their wines using a combination of both modern and traditional methods and they keep their production very small. These are high quality wines that are in high demand.

The village level Barolo is an absolute must try in their range of extraordinary wines.
