Mas Martinet
Mas Martinet were established around twenty years ago, and are widely acknowledged as being one of the first producers of the 'Priorat Renaissance'. Their focus is fully on good wine coming from proper vineyard management. Much care was taken over matching scion to rootstock to soil and climate (they grow Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet and Syrah). Now, the owner Sarah Perez is putting more focus on vineyard sustainability and indigenous grape varieties.
Menut is an easy drinking Priorat style based on Garnacha, the local name for Grenache. While still approachable in youth, Martinet Bru is a more structured wine. Fruit is sourced from vineyards exposed to the south-west wind known as garbinada, which cools the last hours of the hottest summer afternoons and slows ripening while allowing acidity to be retained.
The single vineyard wines, represent different stages in Priorat's history. Cami Pesseroles is an homage to the time immediately after the region had suffered the ravages of phylloxera and vinegrowers set about replanting with the Carinena grape. The vines were high-yielding, and so profitable for the vignerons at that time. Now that the vines are old, they produce low yields of highly concentrated, complex fruit which is made into a very special wine.
Clos Martinet is a modern and expressive blend, which speaks to more recent developments in Priorat vineyards, which have seen the planting of international varieties like Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
