The first traces of the Hugel family in Alsace can be traced back to the 15th century. Some two centuries later, Hans Ulrich Hugel settled in Riquewihr, where the family are still based. In 1639 he took charge of the very powerful Corporation of Winegrowers. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hugel family gained an enviable reputation for their vine growing skills and for the meticulous way in which they cultivated their vineyards. In 1902, Frédéric Emile Hugel left the old family property and established himself in premises in the centre of Riquewihr which still form the heart of the family business. After 1918, a handful of far sighted and courageous winegrowers, including Frédéric Emile Hugel, took steps to save the vineyards of Alsace. This veritable pioneer devoted his entire life to the promotion of high-quality wines from noble grape varieties. His son Jean continued this work, as did his grandchildren; Georges, Jean and André. Today the family lead the way in both retaining old traditions and leading quality and innovation.

The Hugel family's vineyard estates cover more than 25 hectares, exclusively in Riquewihr, and almost half of which are in the Grand Cru zone.

No use of fertiliser, low yields, vines averaging thirty years of age, thinning out of excess bunches, and picking always by hand, are all factors which contribute to rigorously high levels of quality. In addition to its own estates, the Hugel family purchases grapes and grapes alone, from growers under long-term contract, farming more than 100 hectares. Thanks to the skill of their growers, a dozen of the best villages of Alsace thereby contribute to the quality of "Hugel" wines. Their grapes are also always picked by hand, and according to a pre-arranged timetable.

Hugel produce various styles of wines from dry to sweet, from affordable to luxurious. The Hugel 'Classic' wines are range of straight varietals from some of the regions very best sites and communicate both terroir and typicity. They also produce staggering 'Vendange Tardive' and 'Selection de Grains Nobles': incredibly concentrated and focussed sweet wines that they helped to create.
