Familia Cassone

The Cassone family can trace their history back to Piedmont in Italy. They arrived in Argentina in the 19th century, part of the influx of European immigrants to the country. Roberto Cassone started making wine in small quantities in the 1950's and passed down his knowledge and enthusiasm to his son Eduardo. Familia Cassone as we know it today was started in 1998 by Eduardo and his wife Florencia and their 3 children. Today they craft boutique wines to the same small scale as Roberto in the 1950's.
The families small holding of vineyards lies in the Lujan de Cuyo region of Mendoza. They have just over 100 hectares planted to low yielding vines (some of which are over 90 years old!) The Finca Agrelo estate produces a range of varieties whilst the Finca la Dominga vineyard is home to some very high quality Malbec.
Despite the family's rich history, Cassone are a young producer in Argentina having started as recently as 1998. Everything here, from the fruit to the labelling is done by hand. They really some up what it means to be a boutique producer and it is truly a family affair with Eduardo's brother Federico, wife Florencia and three children all working in the company.
The range of wines produced here is small but of exceptional quality. The Obra Prima range stands out as it makes full advantage of the old vines and is super concentrated and full bodied. The Maximus takes it all to the next level and really gives the mind and palate something to think about.
"I've always had a soft spot for small family run wineries and I was not disappointed here. Arriving an hour late (it was difficult to find) I was greeted with the same enthusiasm shown to the vines and wines. A wonderful family, wonderful operation and superb wines." Lee Isaacs, South American specialist.
