Douro & Beira

The Douro is possibly Portugal's most famous wine region. Its reputation is built on the fortified wines of Porto, but there is much to discover in this region's table wine production. There are a staggering 100+ indigenous grape varieties in the Douro, and these produce some of Portugal's most consistent red wines. Red wines dominate production and are based on the principal grape varieties of Port - Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and the like. In fact, many of the best still wines of the region are made by Port producers. White wines are less important to the Douro, but some good examples are still made, particularly from grapes grown at high altitude in what is the world's largest mountain vineyard. New production methods such as earlier picking and more judicious use of new oak have led to fresher, better balanced wines. Beira is located directly to the South of the Douro, and covers two distinct regions between the Douro and Alentejo. The harsh continental climate makes wine production difficult, but good red wines are still made - the best of which are produced from Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro.
