Bowmore

The Bowmore distillery was founded in 1779 on the shores of Loch Indaal on the island of Islay. Bowmore thus claims to be the first Islay single malt. It was named after the Islands administrative capital. The distilleries proximity to the see plays an integral in the maturing process adding salty aromas.

The history of Bowmore is its greatest tribute to success. It has use of the purest water from the Laggan River, combined with traditional floor malted, perfectly peat dried malt and choice oak casks which are stored under sea level in their envied No.1 Vaults, create this well balanced and much loved malt whisky.

The range includes the following malts: Ledgend, Small Batch Release, 12 year old, 15 year old "Darkest", 18 year old, 25 year old, Delivs Casks, Tempest, Laimrig, Maltmans Selection as well as some vintage casks such as 1981, 1982, 1985 and Black Bowmore 1964.

Bowmore is one of the few distilleries which still have its own floor malting. They also use peat during the drying phase of malting which gives the whisky the smoky/iodine smell for which Islay malts have become synonymous. Bowmore is home to the storage warehouses in Scotland, however, not only are they the oldest but the only ones below sea level. These cool, dark and damp conditions are perfect for the maturing of whisky. The whiskies are aged in both American ex-bourbon casks as well as ex-sherry casks from Spain. Today the distillery is owned by a Japanese company called Suntory who took over in 1994.
