Bird in Hand

Website: http://www.birdinhand.com.au/

The Bird in Hand winery is situated in Southern Australia's Adelaide Hills. The seaside influence of the Gulf of St. Vincent, the cloud-trapping rise of the Mount Lofty Ranges and plenty of Australian sun all combine to create the perfect conditions for cool-climate winemaking.

Owner Andrew Nugent happened upon the site for the winery in the late 1990s. A nineteenth century gold mine turned dairy farm, waiting for its next owner. Andrew was set upon a life of winemaking, and felt that he had found exactly the place to do it. And since its inception in 1997, it remains very much a family business, with the Nugent family still living on the estate.

Kym Milne oversees the winemaking at Bird in Hand. He was the second ever Australian Master of Wine, and spent almost a decade as Senior winemaker at Kiwi legends Villa Maria. He has been working with Bird in Hand since 2003. He was named Australian winemaker of the year not once but twice!

Bird in Hand produces a range of highly acclaimed wines that are quality conscious and proudly Australian. The Nest Egg range is characterised by power, structure, and generous use of French Oak. The wines show their best after several years of maturation. The Bird in Hand range is made to be enjoyed young - but these are still serious wines, which will also continue to develop over mid-term ageing.

The philosophy at Bird in Hand was summed up by owner Andrew Nugent: "What I love about winemaking is the aspirational side. The combination of agriculture and science and art - the ability to be creative while pursuing quality and excellence."
