Amrut Distilleries

Amrut Distilleries was established in 1948 around the same time that India was becoming a recognised nation. Its founder, Shri J N Radhakrishna, started by bottling alcoholic beverages such as rum and brandy. Amrut only started to produce malt whisky in the 1980's. At that time, an Indian whisky could contain as little as 4% malt whisky, the rest comprised of molasses spirit. Amrut wanted to make a whisky which would meet international standards. The company then enlisted the help of Scottish whisky experts to increase their quality of whisky.

The barley used in the making of Amrut is grown at the foot of the Himalayas. The barrels are aged at an elevation of 3000ft, where they mature extremely quickly, loosing as much as 15% per year in "Angles Share". Due to this rapid maturation, the whiskies are best released after only a few years thus enabling a faster bottling and release date.

The range includes: Amrut Indian Single Malt Whisky 46% Amrut Peated Indian Single Malt Whisky 46% Amrut Fusion Indian Single Malt Whisky 50% Amrut Cask Strength Amrut Peated Indian Single Malt Whisky Cask Strength As well as a limited release selection.

Neelakanta Rao Jagdale is the current managing director of Amrut Distilleries and has managed to export his malt whisky to 22 countries.
